One of the most prestigious honors institutes - the Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted - in the country is in danger of being eliminated. Due to major state funding cuts, all honors institutes, including the Essex School, have lost their funding from the Ohio Department of Education. The School Study Council of Ohio, a non-profit 501(3)(c) organization would like to continue its sponsorship of this vital program that has served gifted high school youth for the past 34 years.
"As a graduate of the very first Essex School for gifted students, I have been struck over the years at the importance and value of this unique opportunity to bring together some of the highest achieving students from around the state. In this action-packed week of programs, they learn from one another, gain exposure to leadership roles in Ohio's public and private sectors, and develop the kinds of personal and emotional ties that will help persuade them ultimately to pursue their exceptional talents and skills here in Ohio. This is a small but substantial investment in educational excellence that made a notable difference for me and makes the same difference for all the young people who have the opportunity to participate each year." - Mr. Richard Cordray, Ohio Attorney General
